A club that belongs to its members

For generations, San Diego families have met at Bayside to swim, play and spend Sunday together. You learn to swim here at four, play padel tournaments at forty, and play cards in the shade in the afternoon.

The club runs by its members and for them. Every program has its volunteers, its coaches and its habits, and everyone shares the same pools, the same terrace and the same horizon.

“Everyone brings something: a grain of sand, a pebble, or a pillar.”

From a bayfront swim club to Bayside

It all started in 1962, when a saltwater pool was built on the shore of the bay. A white pavilion, a sign in big letters, and San Diego discovered its summers on Harbor Drive — pools, diving boards, volleyball and water polo tournaments.

Over the years, families from across the city took the place over, added the indoor pool and the courts, and turned a swim club into Bayside Sport Club. The spirit of the original bayfront pool never went away: sixty years later, members still meet at the water’s edge.

The vintage photos, found in members’ family albums, are gathered in “Bayside Oldies”, our memory album. Browse through it — and if your family archives hide a treasure, share it with us.
